Though the Pittsburgh Steelers started off the 2025 NFL season with a narrow 34-32 victory against the New York Jets, TJ Watt is not satisfied with the team’s defense. In his private conversation with the national reporter Cameron Wolfe, Watt has shed light on why this season matters to him and how they are capable of hoisting the Super Bowl trophy in Levi’s Stadium in February 2026.

Just a few hours before the Steelers-Seahawks game on Sunday, NFL reporter Wolfe dropped what the star linebacker told him, not just about the Seattle Seahawks game but about him visualising a Super Bowl victory. But first of all, let’s look at what TJ told the reporter about the Steelers’ awful film session this week.

TJ Watt on Watching Steelers’ Awful Defense in Week 1

Wolfe said and wrote on X, “TJ Watt told me this week that he had an awful defensive film watch. He said we were upset with our play. It’s not a Steelers’ ball, but we don’t overcome it by doing too much. We play sound assignment ball. Watt also admitted to me there’s certainly a level of urgency this year, an all-in feel. You get Aaron Rodgers, a Ramsey, a Metcalf, but he said there’s urgency at every stage of my career.” This is the biggest storyline of the Steelers this year.

They have one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history- Aaron Rodgers- leading the offense. His four touchdown passes in MetLife Stadium against his former team were incredibly awesome. Along with him, former Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf is also making the opponents’ defenders think about their careers again. But what Wolfe reports here is not about how great the Steelers’ offense is. Rather, he is clearly pointing out how Watt is looking at the defense of the team, which hasn’t made a single sack yet. Watt has also said that his not getting any sacks is “fueling” him now.

TJ Watt told me they had an “awful” defensive film watch this week. It wasn’t Steelers ball. He was vocal with team.

Watt told me he feels different urgency now to claim the only thing he doesn’t have, what eats at him – a Super Bowl.

The Steelers’ defensive unit is the highest paid in the NFL for the fourth consecutive year, and this is what triggers yinzer, the fans of Pittsburgh. Though safety Juan Thornhill has cleared out air that no one on the Steelers defense is panicking, how they performed in Week 1 was not fascinating for fans.

The defense gave up 394 yards of total offense to the Justin Fields-led Jets. This is the reason that fueled many yinzers and other fans to worry about the star-studded Steelers. No doubt the Steelers missed DeShon Elliott and Joey Porter Jr., and the first-round pick Derrick Harmon; no one is going to spare the defense if they couldn’t contribute to the team’s victory. Compared to the Packers’ defense, Micah Parsons-led defense only allowed 230 yards to the Washington Commanders in their Week 2 victory. This is also the reason Watt is forcing himself to imagine being at the top in defense like Miles Garrett and Parsons. Watt has also spoken about the same to reporter Cameron Wolfe.

Wolfe shares on X, “I talked to Watt about his sack drought, whether he still chases Micah Parsons, Miles Garrett. He said at one point, I wanted to be known as the best pass rusher in the league. Now I think about getting deep in the playoffs.” But is this the single reason why Watt is pulling off his sleeves this season? Probably not. The biggest reason for pulling the 30-year-old is the Super Bowl trophy.

TJ Watt Highlights Urgency Talking About Super Bowl

Per reports, Watt has also said, “I walk past those six Super Bowl trophies every single day, and it eats at me that I have not done it yet. He said it fuels me. It drives me. My family needs it. I need it. That’s what fuels me now.” The 2021 NFL season’s Defensive Player of the Year couldn’t forget his 22.5 sacks in a single season. He might be visualising those top number of sacks this year after getting his share of money in his three-year, $123 million contract extension. Let’s see if the Steelers fans can see Watt take down more QBs this season.
