Since the New York Giants signed Russell Wilson following the acquisition of Jameis Winston, the tussle for the starting role was unavoidable. And after former Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart‘s drafting, things were already heating up in New York. Winston, like any other quarterback, had a dream to lead the Giants’ QB room in 2025, but things aren’t going his way.

First up, with the Giants’ head coach Brian Daboll‘s praise and confidence in Wilson as a starter, the former Browns QB might have hoped for a backup role. But Dart occupied the QB2 position before the former Heisman trophy winner. Daboll has said, “I have a lot of confidence in Russ.”

So, Winston, in the 2025 NFL season, will be serving the second backup position to Russell Wilson, that is QB3 position. And what’s Jameis’ reaction to this? What is going through Winston’s mind right now is not ordinary. The 31-year-old signal-caller has recently cleared his stance when reporters asked him the obvious question: What’s his reaction to being named QB3?

Winston replied, “As a competitor, you want to be the starter. But I prepare to be the starter, I know I’m a starter in this league.” Actually, many experts had already believed that Russell Wilson was supposed to be a starter if the competition was between Winston and Wilson.

Jameis Winston also added, “But you have to be grateful for your role… My role right now is to assist Russ and Jaxson to be the best that they can be while preparing to be the best that I can be. No matter if I’m 3, 33, this is my first year being number 19, so it’s always a first for everything.” Winston lastly said, “I focus on what I would love. And what I would love is for this team to have success.”

Jameis Winston is asked about being named QB3 on the Giants' roster behind Russell Wilson and Jaxson Dart:

The interesting part is that Jameis might have had an idea that his starting role was in danger. That’s the reason he was answering the starting QB-related questions with so much detail. Talking about Russell Wilson, the relationship with the 36-year-old QB, and competition with him on April 1, 2025, Jameis Winston had delivered a friendly take on Wilson.

“Whether it’s a veteran quarterback that I have to compete with and help serve and help make better for this team, or it’s a quarterback who is coming in from college who I have to help get better, who I have to compete with and serve,” Winston said. He also added, “There is only one of us, so in that job requirement, you have to be able to compete and to be able just to be your very best self. And whoever is the best guy gets the job — like, that’s just how it works since I’ve been in the NFL.”

Winston’s rapport with Russ is quite good, but his relationship with rookie quarterback Dart was a bit unpredictable. However, with his recent take, Winston’s point of view of looking at Dart is crystal clear. Hopefully, the 31-year-old will get his chance if QB1 and QB2 cannot meet expectations. Throughout his decade-long NFL career, Winston has repeatedly proven his worth, reflected in his 61.2% completion percentage, 24,225 passing yards, and most importantly, his 154 touchdowns. Let’s see if Winston gets his chance.
