The Detroit Lions are turning to a familiar type of roster move. The Lions have added a versatile athlete who can line up at more than one position. After spending time in both New England and Baltimore last year, the newest practice squad signing brings college production, pro experience, and the ability to fill multiple roles in Detroit’s system.

The Detroit Lions Added Malik Cunningham to the Practice Squad

According to multiple sources, former New England Patriots and Baltimore Ravens wide receiver/quarterback Malik Cunningham is signing with the team. Cunningham went undrafted out of Louisville in 2023 but drew interest thanks to his dual-threat ability. 26-year-old Cunningham was a four-year starter at quarterback in college. He threw for more than 9,600 yards and 70 touchdowns while adding over 3,000 rushing yards and 50 rushing scores.

The New England Patriots were the first to take a chance on him, signing him as an undrafted free agent in the NFL Draft 2023. Interestingly, former Pats head coach Bill Belichick experimented with Cunningham at both quarterback and wide receiver, and the rookie spent most of his last season bouncing between the practice squad and active roster.

According to ESPN.com, Cunningham appeared in one game for New England in 2023, lining up as a wideout. He never logged a snap at quarterback in the regular season. Cunningham’s Patriots stint ended last December when the Baltimore Ravens claimed him off waivers. But with Lamar Jackson entrenched at QB and depth elsewhere, Cunningham was released at the end of training camp.

Now, Detroit is giving him another shot. For the Lions, Cunningham provides practice depth and the ability to run scout-team plays at multiple positions. With Dan Campbell’s coaching staff known for valuing versatility and toughness, Cunningham’s skill set could give him a chance to stick around. At the very least, Detroit gets a developmental option with speed, athleticism, and the kind of creativity that could pay off if he finds the right role.

Head coach Dan Campbell has often stressed the value of versatility on his roster, giving chances to players who can handle multiple roles. “If you can do more than one thing, your value to the team goes up,” Campbell once said during training camp earlier this year. Cunningham fits that approach. He can provide scout-team reps at quarterback, line up at receiver when needed, and give the Lions flexibility as they prepare for different opponents.
